7 Skin Care Tips for Flawless Skin

Our skin is the largest organ on our body, and it’s the first thing that people notice when they look at us. As such, many of us have been tempted to do whatever we can to improve the condition of our skin, from changing our diet to starting a new skin care regimen. While some of these strategies might work, there are certain things you should never do if you want healthy skin. These seven skin care advantages for flawless skin will help you ensure that your skin stays in its best condition possible.

Step 01- Get Rid of Acne

Face Acne

Acne is caused by an excess of sebum, an oily substance that our skin naturally produces. The first step in eliminating acne and reducing oiliness is to wash your face twice a day with water and a gentle cleanser. You should never scrub your face. To reduce acne, look for products that contain salicylic acid, retinol, or glycolic acid. Make sure to follow up with a moisturizer after washing your face. If you have sensitive skin, try avoiding products labeled as anti-aging as they tend to contain harsh chemicals. You may also want to see a dermatologist. Those who do will most likely be prescribed oral antibiotics such as tetracycline the only FDA-approved topical antibiotic, erythromycin, and clindamycin.

Step 02- Stay Hydrated

Even skin is a part of your body and needs water to stay healthy. If you’re not drinking enough water, your body can struggle to maintain hydration levels for healthier-looking skin. Be sure you’re drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day. Preferably more than that if it’s hot outside or you’re exercising heavily. Be warned: your urine should be clear, not dark yellow or brown in color. Another way to tell if you’re staying hydrated enough is by how often you need to urinate. Aim for once every 2 hours during waking hours and less than twice at night when sleeping.

Step 03- Moisturize Your Skin

One of my most common questions is how to treat dark circles under the eyes. Dark circles are caused by a pigment imbalance and therefore can be treated with professional-grade skin care products that contain vitamin C, kojic acid, or retinol. Vitamin C works by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for converting dopamine and L-DOPA into melanin the pigment responsible for dark circles. The molecular structure of kojic acid is similar to that of tyrosinase and it too inhibits melanin formation. The other two ingredients above, Vitamin C and kojic acid will exfoliate as well as brighten your skin as part of your morning routine.

Step 05- Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen is your best defense against skin cancer and early wrinkling. Many people don’t realize that you should apply sunscreen every day of the year, no matter how sunny it is outside. If you’re working on a computer or reading by lamplight, there are still UV rays damaging your skin! Don’t forget your neck and ears. They can also get sunburned and deformed. To ensure an even application, rub sunscreen in with your fingers. Don’t rub it in straight from the bottle, which can clog pores. And be sure to re-apply after swimming or sweating heavily—liquids wash off easier than creams.

Step 06- Eat Healthy Food

What you eat has a direct impact on your skin. So, instead of downing fried foods and other artery-clogging snacks, focus on incorporating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet. These foods are not only loaded with antioxidants—which fight aging free radicals—but they’re also naturally low in fat. You should also limit your sugar intake; while sugar doesn’t necessarily clog your pores, it does cause inflammation, which triggers acne breakouts. For healthy skin, stick to sweets like dark chocolate that’s rich in flavonoids, berries, or pears that have a lot of vitamin C.

Step 07- Exfoliate

I can’t stress enough how important exfoliation is. Not only does it ensure that you are getting rid of dry, dead skin cells (translation: clean, clear skin). But it also stimulates blood flow. Exfoliating keeps your pores open and fresh, allowing them to bring oxygen and nutrients up from your bloodstream and keeping out toxins like dirt and oil.

You should exfoliate 2-3 times a week for best results. One easy way to do so is by making a paste with baking soda and water and using it as an overnight mask. This will help loosen clogged pores while you sleep! If you don’t have time to wait around all night, use an exfoliator designed specifically for your skin type or go old school with coconut oil!

Advantages of Using Skin Care Products

While you might think you’re doing yourself a favor by not using expensive skin care products, most of them are made with high-quality ingredients that actually make your skin better. For example, many commercially available facial cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and irritated.
